Pune GBS Outbreak: What You Need to Know
The Pune Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) outbreak is spreading at an alarming rate, with 101 cases and one confirmed death. In the last 24 hours alone, 28 new cases have been reported, and 16 patients are currently on ventilator support.
What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)?
GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and, in severe cases, respiratory failure.
Symptoms of GBS
- Early Signs: Tingling or weakness in the legs, making it difficult to walk or wear slippers.
- Progression: Weakness spreading to the arms, leading to difficulty in gripping objects.
- Severe Cases: Paralysis affecting breathing muscles, requiring ventilator support.
Why is GBS Spreading in Pune?
Recent cases have been linked to Campylobacter Jejuni, a bacteria commonly found in contaminated food and water. Consuming improperly cooked food, street food, or unclean water increases the risk of infection.
How to Stay Safe
- Avoid Eating Outside: Street food and poorly stored items like paneer, rice, and cheese pose a high risk.
- Wash Fruits and Vegetables: Ensure fresh produce is cleaned thoroughly before consumption.
- Boost Immunity: Include vitamin C-rich foods such as oranges, guavas, and amla in your diet.
- Drink Safe Water: Always consume boiled or filtered water to prevent infections.
- Consume Pasteurised Milk: Stick to branded, packaged milk to avoid bacterial contamination.
- Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands regularly, especially before eating or preparing food.
- Cook Food Thoroughly: Ensure meat, eggs, and dairy products are properly cooked before consumption.
- Monitor Symptoms: If you experience persistent weakness, seek immediate medical attention.
Is GBS Contagious?
No, Guillain-Barre Syndrome is not contagious. It cannot spread from person to person but can be triggered by bacterial infections.
