Water scarcity has long been a challenge in many rural parts of Maharashtra. But a transformative step has been taken in Kinarewadi, Shirala Taluka, where a massive ₹39.82 crore water reservoir project is currently under construction. Spearheaded by the efforts of local leadership and monitored by Viraj Udyog Group’s Chairman Viraj Naik, this project promises to change the face of agriculture and water availability for surrounding villages.

Project Overview

  • Location: Kinarewadi, Shirala Taluka
  • Estimated Cost: ₹39.82 Crores
  • Total Benefiting Farmland: 247 hectares
  • Villages Benefited: Kinarewadi, Dhanekawadi, Kalmwadi, and Kadamwadi

The reservoir is designed to not only irrigate hundreds of hectares of land but also to provide a consistent source of drinking water for local communities.

Leadership and Vision

The recent inspection of the ongoing reservoir construction was carried out by Viraj Naik, Chairman of Viraj Udyog Group. His vision is clear: to ensure the project is completed with high quality and within the stipulated timeline.

“The reservoir should be completed swiftly and efficiently so that it can store sufficient water and benefit the farming community,” said Naik during the site visit.

Benefits to Agriculture

With over 247 hectares of farmland gaining access to irrigation, this project is expected to boost:

  • Crop productivity
  • Multiple cropping seasons
  • Reduced dependence on monsoons
  • Increased farmer income

Water security in this region means farmers can confidently plan agricultural activities year-round, moving beyond just monsoon-fed farming.

Impacted Villages

The reservoir will directly benefit the following villages:

  1. Kinarewadi
  2. Dhanekawadi
  3. Kalmwadi
  4. Kadamwadi

These villages have long faced challenges related to inconsistent water supply. This project aims to eliminate those issues.

Drinking Water Benefits

Apart from irrigation, the reservoir will also be a reliable source of drinking water, solving another critical issue for the local population. This dual-purpose design makes the Kinarewadi Water Reservoir Project a model for future infrastructure projects in rural India.

Community and Stakeholder Support

During the site inspection, several key community leaders were present to support and oversee the development:

  • Shivaji Patil, Director of VISHWAS
  • Sadashiv Navade, Former Sarpanch
  • Prakash Sondulkar, Local Leader
  • Sachin Dhere, Farmer Representative

Their involvement highlights the strong community backing for this initiative.

A Step Toward Sustainable Rural Development

Projects like the Kinarewadi Water Reservoir symbolize progress in sustainable rural development. With proper execution, such infrastructure can have long-lasting positive effects on:

  • Agriculture
  • Rural employment
  • Migration control
  • Drinking water accessibility
  • Village-level economic growth

Conclusion

The Kinarewadi Water Reservoir Project is more than just a construction effort—it is a lifeline for farmers and rural residents of Shirala Taluka. With its massive ₹39.82 crore investment and potential to impact hundreds of lives, the project is poised to be a benchmark for rural infrastructure development in Maharashtra.
